Take Studio — Guide & Support
From your first project to a video you can share.
Make your first video
- Start a project. Choose your canvas, then write or paste a script. Use shot cards to divide it into manageable sections. On a fresh library, Try a sample creates original synthetic footage for practice without camera access.
- Record or import. Record with the prompter, or import an SDR video from Photos or Files. Camera and microphone permissions are requested when needed. If microphone access is off, choose Record Without Audio to record a silent take. You can also turn off Original audio for a selected clip in Edit video.
- Choose your takes. Review the saved footage, compare alternatives and add your preferred takes to Edit video.
- Shape the edit. Trim, split, reorder and adjust framing or sound. Your originals stay intact. Changing canvas preserves the source video.
- Add captions and export. Open Captions, review the text and timing, then export. Play the finished file before saving or sharing it.
Manual and automatic captions
Choose Captions → Add caption to enter text and adjust its start and end. Manual captions work without a speech model or internet connection. Review the preview at your chosen canvas and make sure the words fit.
Transcribe on device is optional. It checks your iPhone, language and installed Apple model. If a download is needed, you can decline and keep editing manually. There is no cloud transcription fallback. Review proposed text before applying it; canceling leaves existing captions intact.
Export and save
Keep Take Studio open while rendering. Resolve the issues shown under Before you export and check available storage. Exports are SDR MP4 at 30 fps, up to five minutes: portrait 1080×1920, square 1080×1080 or landscape 1920×1080. Use SDR source footage; HDR imports are currently unsupported.
Caption burn-in is your choice. Recording prompts, controls and comparison screens never appear in the exported video. Silent input or muted clips may produce an export without sound. Export again after changing an edit to create an updated version.
Use Save to Photos, Save to Files or the system share sheet. If Photos access is denied, the finished export remains available and Files still works. Canceling a save sheet does not mean the file was saved there. Open the destination app and play the saved file to check it.
Keep an editable backup
Open a project's menu, choose Back Up, then save the .takestudio file somewhere you control. It contains the editable project and original media. Save finished exported videos separately.
Restore through Settings → Storage & backups → Restore project backup. Restore validates the archive and creates a new project. Backups are not encrypted or password-protected; avoid sharing one when you only mean to share a finished video.
Archiving a project organizes it and makes room under the free active-project limit; it does not free media storage. Trash keeps items recoverable until permanent deletion. Do not uninstall the app as a first troubleshooting step. There is no Take Studio server copy of your work.
Interrupted recording or saving
Backgrounding or locking the device stops recording; it never resumes automatically. Reopen the project and inspect any recovery options. An unfinished movie may not be recoverable, so play a recovered take before relying on it. Keep a questionable file until you have decided whether to recover or discard it.
If saving fails, preserve the current project, check free storage and retry. Camera denial should still leave import and editing available. Change permissions in iPhone Settings when you want to use those features.
Free plan, Pro and billing
The free plan supports one active project with the complete manual editing, captioning and export workflow. Archive a project to create another. Existing and archived projects remain editable and exportable after a subscription ends.
Where available, monthly and annual Take Studio Pro subscriptions unlock the same additional active-project and caption-preset features. Apple supplies prices and eligible trial offers. Development builds may show local test offers or no offers; that is not a completed live purchase.
Use Settings → Restore purchases with the Apple Account used to subscribe. A pending purchase requires Apple's confirmation before Pro becomes active. Use Manage subscription or Apple subscription settings to cancel. For refund requests, use reportaproblem.apple.com.
